“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God…”
Ephesians 2:8
We made it to church. For some of us, that’s no small miracle. The week was long. Sunday morning chaos was real. Getting out the door felt more like a battle than a blessing. But here we are.
And the Gospel’s invitation isn’t to strive harder—it’s to rest deeper.
Many of us have spent years chasing God with sincere hearts, but built on systems not centered in Him. We’ve been taught to perform, to push, to fast more, pray harder, tithe perfectly. But that’s not the Gospel. That’s gospel-adjacent.
And here in Colorado Springs, we’re finding that the Church—our church, The Gathering—is being invited to return. To center again. To rebuild.
The real Gospel—the scandalously good news—is this:
You’ve been saved.
By grace.
Through faith.
And none of it was your own doing.
After 30 years of ministry, I’m re-inspecting my own foundations. Some things were built squarely on Jesus. But some? On effort. On systems. On a sincere attempt to help God.
Those parts are crumbling. And thank God they are.
Because I’m learning again that salvation is not a ladder—it’s a door. And it doesn’t swing open by merit. It swings open by mercy.
“We believe salvation is a relational restoration, by grace through faith, into the life of the Trinity.”
(From our statement of belief)
This is what we’re preaching at The Gathering:
Salvation isn’t just about being rescued from sin. It’s about being brought into union with God. This is the Gospel. Not a transaction. A communion.
And as we return to these truths—here in the mountains and neighborhoods of Colorado Springs—we are finding ourselves freshly undone by the kindness of God.
When I lived in Israel for a couple months, one of the most transformative things I encountered was Sabbath. As sundown approached, everything quieted. No phones. No TV. Just families, friends, and rest. And I remember thinking: We don’t do this back home.
In the American church, we blow right past the fourth commandment like it was optional. But rest is not a luxury—it’s a command. A gift. An entry point into divine communion.
And here, in our Colorado Springs community, we’re choosing to take it seriously.
We believe that anxiety is not the door.
Frustration is not the way.
Rest is how we move forward.
Peace is our constant companion.
Because Jesus isn’t waiting for us at the finish line. He’s walking with us now.
In Acts 1, Jesus told His disciples:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”
Not performers. Not producers. Witnesses.
That’s our posture at The Gathering.
We’re watching what He’s doing.
We’re learning how to see it in one another.
And we’re responding with awe.
During a recent encounter, I saw it in a vision: wheat sprouting from my arms—harvest emerging not out there, but here. In me. In us.
The Lord said, “You’re full of harvest.”
I used to think of harvest as something I had to work to produce. But now I see it: we carry the harvest of God within us. And the people sitting beside us in our community? They’re the laborers in our fields—and we in theirs.
We don’t just gather to get filled up.
We gather to see Christ in one another.
To water what’s already growing.
To call forth what’s already full.
This is the kind of church we are becoming.
The church has long excelled at behavior modification. But the Gospel is not about external change. It’s about transfiguration—an inner work of union that transforms us from the inside out.
It’s time to recover the Gospel.
And let it recover us.
Lord,
We’re laying it all down—the striving, the religious scaffolding, the fear.
Teach us to live from rest.
To see You clearly.
To see one another with eyes of grace.
Make us Your resting place.
Build Your house in us through love—hesed—and make us one.
Amen.
