Discovering True Sabbath Rest: A Call to Communion Over Striving
Sabbath rest isn’t just a concept tucked into Scripture—it’s the birthright of every believer in Christ. This past Sunday at The Gathering in Colorado Springs, Chris Berglund delivered a message that wasn’t just a teaching—it was an invitation. An invitation into true Sabbath rest, into the finished work of Christ, into a life lived from union, not striving.
In a world full of spiritual hustle, religious duty, and never-ending to-do lists, many believers find themselves tired, anxious, and burned out. But Scripture offers something far better:
“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God…” (Hebrews 4:9, ESV)
This blog explores what that Sabbath rest really means and how you can begin to live from it.
Chris began by pointing us to Genesis 2:3: “So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” This wasn’t rest from exhaustion—it was rest from completion. God’s work was finished. And man’s first full day on earth was a day of rest.
That rhythm still echoes.
We were created to live from rest, not for rest. To walk in daily communion with God. The fall disrupted this rest, and religion has often made it more complicated. But through Christ’s finished work, the way has been made clear again. This is the essence of Sabbath rest—an invitation to return to union.
Chris vulnerably shared personal stories—some funny, others painful—about being misunderstood, facing spiritual opposition, and learning to abide in a supernatural peace. His teaching from Hebrews 4 reminded us that the true Sabbath rest is not just a day—it’s a posture of the heart.
When we rest in God, we acknowledge the full sufficiency of the cross. We stop laboring in our own strength to get God to move. We allow Him to live His life through us.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)
This kind of communion with God takes time and space. That’s why we’re launching something new:
Beholding Nights — a space for communing prayer, soaking worship, and shared rest in God’s presence. Led by Chris and Susan Berglund, these evenings are designed to help you cultivate Sabbath rest, not just as a theology—but as a lived reality.
If Sunday morning is the table, Wednesday night is the quiet hour after dinner—when you linger and enjoy the one you love.
You’re invited.
